, december 19th. christmas is almost here. >> very respectful dialogue. the nra had a respectful statement. i think a lot of people showing respect on this. >> feel something may be be happening. >> feel some grown-ups, maybe. there are, of course, exceptions. >> there are a few. we have mike barnicle with us. you're not an exception. beautiful piece in "the daily news" today. we'll read that in must read. thank you very much. former treasury officials. mark ratner is with us as well. he has a must read. i'm serious. >> beautiful. >> also in washington, washington anchor for "bbc world news america" katty kay. >> no pieces, sorry. >> you'll write one next time. thank you. so we've got a lot to get to this morning. >> a lot to talk about today. >> those exceptions, what are you talking about? >> just in the conversation about everything you thought there were two exceptions. >> rick perry, governor of texas, and -- >> is it bob -- >> they said we need to -- we need to arm teachers. >> we have to think about it. >> somebody in the school with a gun. >> guns in school. that's great. you know wha
, and allow people to have them with extended clips is laughable. i expect members of the nra are going to continue to expel this mischaracterization of what these weapons are for. host: frank is from oklahoma. we want to show the front page of "usa today" this morning. caller: i do not think the laws need to be changed. i have a 380 that i carry as a concealed weapon. it is about the same size as a 9 millimeter. host: so it is a handgun. caller: i carry it as a concealed weapon and i am licensed to do that. i have a home defense weapon that i use, a model 191145 caliber semi-automatic. host: do you carry that into a weapon with you at all times? why? caller: yes. physicallyow and limited as far as my own self defense is concerned. there is a lot of crime in our neighborhood. the helicopter's flight over here all the time chasing criminals. i would like to mention something about the sandy hook incident. i found it ironic that these people were meeting in the school for all this prayer. when prayer's outlawed in school. also, they had the high priest of abortion there giving his appeal
today, we will have live coverage here on the cspan accords. while we wait for the nra to get under way, we spoke earlier with a republican member of congress to get his thoughts on last night's action and the house on fiscal cliff legislation. > >> what happened inside the caucus last night at 7:30. >> it was about the short as one i have ever seen. john boehner said he did not have the vote and we passed the bill, two bills that harry reid has been sitting on and the senate. he said he is available to negotiate. mr. kantor said we would be called back within 48 hours notice and see you after christmas. that's all it was. host: are they negotiate from a position of strength? guest: the speaker has been negotiating as much as he can -- i think the president has not been dealing in good and faith and not negotiating at all. he gave us a plan that was his budget that was voted on in the senate, 99-0 against his budget and in the house, he gets zero votes for it also. that is what the president put on the table. i don't think he has been negotiating in good faith. we need to find solutions
correct and partially wrong. it looks like the nra's proposal is a lot like exactly what happened after 9/11. immediately though grabbed any federal agent they could to throw them on the planes and later on they put together a really poorly implemented program to arm pilots. and not very many volunteered for the program. i can see the reality. look. he is right in some regard. if someone shows up at a school and there is an armed principal and armed guard clearly that is not going to happen it's unseasonable for starters. it is impractical. let alone the safety implications that come out of all of this. did it work in the skies though? >> well, could argue that it is working because there hasn't been an incident but it looks like every time an american aircraft that gets hijacked there hasn't been any air marshals or both planes that have in iad's on board most of them didn't have armed marshals on them and i don't think there were any armed pilots on them either. so, the air marshall program alone is a billion-dollar program. and the armed pilots program is a lot of the pilots believe it
if there were not a gun involved. yesterday the head of the nra came out ripping -- >> less than 24 hours later. >> bill: ripping into bob costas. here's wayne. >> just disgusted. i mean they tune in to watch a sporting event and meanwhile what they get in regard to this cold-blooded murder that took place is they get a national sportscaster whining about his social agenda that he wants adopted to ban firearms and ban handguns. i mean the american public, it is shameful. they're disgusted by it. >> by the way shout out to the nra for putting a guy named lapierrre in charge of their organization. that's great. >> they know how to do it. >> did he succeed the last guy mr. fancy pants? >> bill: lapierrre says there is an answer here. this wouldn't have happened if only -- right dan do we have -- >> he doesn't say anything -- he wouldn't have said a thing last night if this woman had saved her life by having a firearm available. >> how about the baby? >> bill: why didn't the 2-month-old baby have a gun? >> you can have
following this shooting. >> shame on the nra! >> gun control advocates protested outside of the offices in washington, d.c. the nra has not releasedny statements since the -- released any statements since the shooting and its facebook page has disappeared following other mass shootings. >>> new this morning, a private equity company where the california teachers' pension fund keeps some of its money. it says this will sell its stake to a gun manufacturer. yesterday, the teachers' pension fund said it was reviewing its investment in the private equity firm following the school shooting. >>> two people were seriously hurt in oakland after being -- after being hit by a car. the man and woman were hit in the crosswalk. they were later rushed to the hospital. the driver did stop and is cooperating with police. >>> very busy san francisco mall was evacuated. a fire broke out in a restaurant. firefighters were called to the westfield san francisco center on market street about 8:15 last night. firefighters found smoke in the building. it was coming from a flue fire. they quickly put tut the --
friend and colleague, care lynn mccarthy. close the gun show loophole. for starters, things that n.r.a. members agree with. let's care as much about real guns as we do about toy gun consumer protection. to start us down the road of making our children safer by treating children's gun safety like their auto safety. all the air bags, anti-drunk driving campaigns, child seats, driver education, careful licensing, it slashed the accident rate but it didn't eliminate them altogether. we can't imagine a world without these protections for our families. let's see if we can imagine a world where our children are safer from gun violence. and then make it happen. the speaker pro tempore: the gentleman yields. the chair recognizes the gentleman from pennsylvania, mr. murphy, for five minutes. mr. murphy: madam speaker, i rise today with a heavy heart, to honor petty officer nicholas , a person who sacrificed his life in the most honorable of ways, to protect and save the life of another human being. his life was a testament to the core values of the united states navy, honor, courage and commitme
them. >> reporter: laperriere says the nra hired former republican congressman asa hutchinson to develop a more in depth security plan for schools. hutchison, a also former deputy director of the department of homeland security, compares this debate to the debate over armed federal air marshals. >> it increased safety of airlines. it is not like it is an armed camp when you go on airlines. it is very discrete use of armed guards that has a presence there to protect america. our children less important to protect than our air transportation? i don't think so. >> reporter: but the reaction on capitol hill has been less than enthusiastic it especially from democrats. california democratic senator dianne feinstein calls it, a quote, delay tactic. others suggested that laperriere's plan might have the opposite effect on lawmakers. >> well i think he is so extreme and so tone deaf that he actually helps the cause of us passing sensible gun legislation in the congress. >> we have 10,000 elementary and secondary schools in this country. if you had two officers in each that would cost
